Using Workout Videos as a Personal Trainer

At some point, we have all done it. Be it for motivation, demonstration of exercises or simply to get something new to do in the gym! Watching your favourite athlete or compilation videos is an amazing way of keeping yourself motivated. I know through personal experience that trying new workout plans that you can find online or watching a cheeky 4 minute video can have an incredible effect on your training and results. So why am I writing this post?

Simple. DO NOT believe all you read/see on the internet!

My view is this. 9/10 you will find the new movements or program helpful! They will change how you are training, bring a fresh approach and even help get those results you are working towards. However, when you watch these videos, put yourself in their sneakers and ask yourself the following questions.

1. Is this what they have done to get to where they are at or is it just what they are doing now?

2. Will doing the movements that they are teaching, bring you as much success? Is your body type similar to theirs?

3. Do you have the resources that they have?

For example, when it comes to my third point (above), do you have a nutritionist, chef, massage therapist, chiropractor and physiotherapist on call 24/7? For arguments sake lets take Tiger Woods. I may watch a few instructional videos which shows how he trains in the gym to help him hit those 300 yard drives. Now I may have a goal to be the next big thing in golf. However, basing my progress against Tiger Woods is not helping anyone! Least of all myself! So let’s review those 3 points we suggested earlier.

1. He is already one of the top golfers in the world so do I really think that this is what has got him to where is now? NO.

2. It may bring me success, it may not. Golf is a sport which has many elements that affect performance. I may have a limitation in my spine which means I physically cannot create the movements he does. And finally…

3. Hell NO! The man has limitless funds, the worlds best in every profession surrounding him and all the time in the world to devote to being on the golf course. That is his full time ‘job’.

Believe it or not, I am trying to motivate you through this post. What I am ultimately saying is this. Maybe you are not exactly where you want to be right now but this is why we have goals. Remember that some things are not always what they seem. Some people who we idolise or look up to are usually the tip of very professional outfit.

You are awesome! Keep up the good work!
